Yes. Ctrl+I applies formatting within an application. Unicode italic uses completely different characters that are inherently slanted. The advantage is Unicode italic displays everywhere, while Ctrl+I formatting only works within the same app.
Does italic text include numbers?
Unicode italic doesn't include italic digits for the serif style, but the sans-serif variants have no digit forms either. For italic numbers, consider using the sans-serif italic style which may render slightly differently than serif italic on some devices.
